For Brenda Lee Johnson, (the character played with such adeptness by Kyra Sedgwick) sugar soothes the savage beast. The constant losing battle with her sweet tooth is a predicament with which most of us can readily identify. And no one can say "Thank you, thank you very much" with more subtext. Like a cat toying with a mouse, she uses cloying sweetness to trap the bad guys with feline precision.
More inner conflict comes from her desire to follow the rules, versus her need to get the job done. Her unique managerial style engenders loyalty and shaken heads from her team. The quality of scripts and the rapport amongst the ensemble cast makes for enjoyable viewing.
This original series, one of the best on television, can be seen Monday nights on TNT.
